Meditation is being completely aware of your actions...
Do not allow your thoughts to stray, while you are doing something. Have focus on your actions. One example is watching your breadth. Try to keep your focus on breathing without any thought in the mind. Slowly, you will be only aware of your breathing, allowing your mind to take rest!

Meditation on chakras (for kundalini awakening) is a strict discipline and should be done only under expert supervision.
Using mantras in meditation is always helpful.
